Garbage Disposal Do’s & Don’ts

Garbage Disposal’s have become a constant in modern kitchens and most useful tool. They get rid of unwanted leftovers, expired food & discarded peels. But if not operated or maintained properly, a clogged drain can either become a major inconvenience or an expensive plumbing & drain nightmare.

Here are the Don’t to using your Garbage Disposal!

  • Never put in Non-Food Waste

Things like plastic, paper or general garbage that doesn’t decompose will cause massive backups or end up in our lakes & rivers.

  • Never dispose of Meat or Bones

Disposals cannot handle grinding up meat or bones

  • Never Use Cleaning Chemicals

Chemical Drain cleaners can irreversibly damage your garbage disposal. If you believe your disposal is clogged or jammed, disconnect it and call a professional.

  • Adding Too Much Food Waste at Once

Work in batches to avoid jams & clogs.

  • Foods to Avoid!!

Pasta, Potato peels, Egg Shells, Seeds or Pits, Rice, Beans, Banana Peels, Coffee Grounds

  • No Grease or Oil!

Grease & Oil will harden, thicken & accumulate over time causing clogs.

Here are the Do’s to using your Garbage Disposal!

  • Use Only Cold Water except when Cleaning!

Using Hot Water can melt food causing it to stick while Cold Water hardens the food making it easier for the disposal to grind it up and push it down the drainpipe.

  • Letting the Cold Water run for a bit first before Adding Your Food

Gradually put food in the disposal until it is fully ground up

  • Run the Disposal for another 10-15 seconds after all the food is gone

This makes sure all the food is cleared the pipe.

  • Clean the Disposal Regularly

Vinegar, Baking Soda, Ice & Lemon, or Lime (with peels). Try freezing some cubes of vinegar & baking soda. Mild Soap is acceptable as well. Sprinkle with baking soda an hour before cleaning.

  • Use Your Disposal Regularly
